Iām am one of those chronic optimists who believes we can reinvent ourselves every year. And the crazier part is, I do!
What better time to start your reinventing process than the beginning of a new year š Whether you land on the Meyers Briggs test as a (F)eeler or a (T)hinker, I know anyone who incorporates the 3 tools Iām about to talk about here will begin to see their goals come to life.
Hereās why:
Our imagination is a powerful thing.Ā
Ā If you can see it, you can have it.
Let’s take fictional author J.K. Rowling. When you read Harry Potter you are reading words she wrote that paint a picture. You use your imagination to see what the author sees. It will be your version of course, but that imagination did not come to be without the use of detailed storytelling. The same goes for us. We need to write each dream in detailed format in order to imagine it. When we can imagine it, we can see it happening. When we can see it happening, we can expect it.
When we expect it, we believe it WILL HAPPEN.
And this is the starting line for every one of our audacious dreams.
1. Life Planner
The reason I like using a life planner is because it asks you questions about your goals that require detailed answers. This is a great aid when it comes to writing out your dreams in a way that you are able to easily imagine it.
i.e. What specific parts of your life do you want to consistently take care of, grow, and spend time on
Wellness (Body, mind, spirit, personal growth) | INTERESTS (Hobbies, Activities, Travel) | LIFESTYLE (Home, Environment, quality of life) |
FAMILY (Parents, Children, Relatives) | COMMUNITY (Friends, Groups, Networks) | ROMANCE (Significant other or dating life) |
WORK (Career, Projects, Business venture) | MONEY (Income, Expenses, Investments) | CONTRIBUTION (Giving, helping, mentoring) |
(excerpt from the Lucky Life tools 2021 Planner)
Then it goes on to ask you even more specific questions for each category to figure out HOW you will accomplish your current goals and how you will accomplish your future goals.
Sometimes in order to come up with successful strategies, you need to be asked the right questions. That is what a life planner is for me.
Itās someone who asks the right questions.
2. Vision Board
And if you want to take it a step further, pictures serve as a great imagination kick-starter! I like to create a Vision Board in the beginning of every year. The process usually consists of me scouring the internet for photos that closest represent each of my goals. Itās time consuming and sometimes tedious, so this year we decided to have a little vision board party at our house to make it a little more festive!
Once Iāve created my vision board pdf, Iāll be printing a copy for my office wall and making it the screensaver on all my devices. That way I can be reminded multiple times throughout the day what Iām believing & working towards.
3. Weekly Schedule
This is something Iāve been doing since I was kid (yes I was somewhat of a nerd child). The reason itās important to create a weekly schedule is so that you can make sure you are creating time for all of your goals. Itās easy to get consumed with one goal category and then ignore the others if we donāt create clear schedules for ourselves. Thatās why having a weekly schedule has been a necessary component in acheiving my goals.
For example, hereās a list of a few goals I have for 2021 and why I need to place them in a weekly schedule:
- Workout 30 min a day
- Eat home cooked healthy meals 6 days a week
- Spend 3 hours a day in my office working on emails, blog posts, social media
- Call 1 friend a week
- Go on a family walk every morning
I know that for me, I canāt sit on a computer for 3 hours without having some endorphins from a workout. So I made sure to put my workout on the schedule before my 3 hour computer purgatory. Also, thereās no way I can cook every meal 6 days out of the week so I spend Sunday afternoons food prepping batches of meals for the week. I also love taking family walks with my husband and dog but when Iām too busy I end up skipping the walk and cramming because Iām not sure if I have enough time. However, with my weekly schedule decided beforehand, I know that every task has an allotted time during the week so I donāt have to wonder whether Iāll have time to fit certain things in. The planning beforehand gives me the peace of mind to know that everything will get done in itās allotted time. And probably the biggest benefit, this practice eliminates the incessant worrying about if Iāll get around to it, which is a stressor and a major waste of precious mental energy. Mental energy we need to use on achieving our audacious amazing goals.
Moral of the story is: In order to be successful, all of this planning matters.
Here are a few tools I use when it comes to setting myself up for success in the new year. I am believing the best for all of you in 2021. That you prosper in all areas, and your imagination of what your life can be will expand beyond what you ever thought was possible. Happy New Year!
