Here’s proof that you don’t need a big budget to give your outdated bathroom a makeover.
In this DIY Bathroom Vanity makeover, we’ll transform these builder grade oak cabinets with just a little bit of paint and hardware. Let’s do this!
Step 1: PREP
Empty all the cabinets, remove all knobs and hardware. Remove drawers and doors labeling each so you know where they belong.
Tape and cover floors, hinges, and anything else nearby you don’t want to get paint on.
Sand the stained cabinets with a 220 sandpaper. If cabinets are painted you’ll need to remove the paint first.
Step 2: PRIME
I used a sprayer to prime my cabinets. It creates the least streaks in my opinion. If you don’t have a sprayer I’d recommend a roller. Otherwise you can use a paint brush, which still works but may show a bit more streaks than the other application options.
If you are painting the cabinets a dark color, consider tinting the primer the same color as your paint.
After the primer dries, sand lightly with your 220 sandpaper.
Step 3: PAINT
On this project, I used a basic Behr cabinet paint. However, I would recommend using a more quality paint. Painting cabinets is a lot of work, and not a job you want to do again anytime soon. That being said, sometimes paying that extra $10 for the gallon is worth not having to repaint the cabinets sooner.
I’d reccomend Benjamin Moore Advance cabinet paint or Farrow & Ball (a semigloss or satin finish). If you have a sprayer, I’d recommend spraying the paint on your cabinets. Otherwise, a roller or paintbrush will work as well. You’ll need 2 coats of paint for the cabinets.
Step 4: Hardware
If you have existing hardware holes, the easiest thing is to find new hardware that fits the existing hardware holes. Otherwise, you’ll need to drill holes into your cabinet doors to fit your new hardware. I suggest using a laser level or regular leveler to make sure your lines are straight.
